INTRODUCTION
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to PersianPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 12 - Making Some Hairy Choices in Iran, John here.
Mehrnaz: سلام (salaam) I'm Mehrnaz.
John: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to improve your fluency through avoiding repetition. The conversation takes place at a department store.
Mehrnaz: It's between Shadi and Hassan.
John: The speakers are family members, therefore, they will speak informal Persian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
! مرسی!!!
John: Listen to the conversation with the English translation
Shadi: Which do you think is better, this one or that one?
Hassan: Let me see! Well, both are around the same price!
Shadi: Yeah, but they have some differences.
Hassan: Well, the smaller hairdryer is lighter too. It also has an easier grip.
Shadi: Yeah, your hand won't get tired!
Hassan: But the white one, although it’s bigger, has three different heat levels.
Shadi: The purple one has three brush types.
Hassan: You should see what features you need. In my opinion, ‘cause you work a lot with the hairdryer, you'd better take the lighter one.
Shadi: That's right! But for styling, these brushes are great!
Hassan: I'll buy you both of them!
Shadi: Really?! Thanks!!!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
John: What are hair salons like in Iran?
Mehrnaz: According to the religion-oriented rules in Iran, women must cover their hair in public.
John: So I presume that means that they can’t have male hairdressers?
Mehrnaz: That’s correct.
John: Do people abide by these rules?
Mehrnaz: The vast majority do. Those that don’t run the risk of facing legal troubles.
John: What kind of treatments are done in hair salons in Iran?
Mehrnaz: Most things you can get anywhere else! You can get your hair dyed and cut, of course.
John: A lot of hair salons have extra services these days, such as other types of beauty treatments or massages. Is that the same in Iran?
Mehrnaz: Yes, you can get a face massage or get your nails done.
John: Finally, how do we say "hairdresser’s" in Persian?
Mehrnaz: آرایشگاه
John: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
John: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is...
Mehrnaz: راحت در دست جا شدن
John: meaning "to have an easy grip."
John: This is a phrase made from multiple words.
Mehrnaz: First is راحت, which means "easy, comfortable." Then is در.
John: This means "in." The next word means "hand."
Mehrnaz: Yes, دست. Next is جا, which is "place" and finally شدن.
John: This means "to get, to become."
Mehrnaz: When speaking this phrase, we change در to تو, which also means "in."
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Mehrnaz: Sure. For example, you can say... این لیوان راحت تو (در) دوست جا می‌شه (می‌شود).
John: ...which means "This glass has an easy grip."
John: Okay, what's the next word?
Mehrnaz: درست کردن مدل مو
John: meaning "hairstyling"
John: This is another phrase. Let’s break it down.
Mehrnaz: First is درست, meaning "right, correct, true." Then is کردن, "to do," followed by مدل
John: This means "model."
Mehrnaz: Yes, it’s followed by the ezaafeh. The last word is مو.
John: That means "hair." Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Mehrnaz: Sure. For example, you can say... درست کردن مدل مو یه مهارته (یک مهارت است).
John: ... which means "Hairstyling is a skill."
John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

John: In this lesson, you'll learn about improving your fluency through avoiding repetition. When we’re talking about nouns in English, we can replace a countable noun with the word "one", or the plural "ones", so that we don’t use the same word multiple times in a sentence.
Mehrnaz: We have a similar system in Persian. You can use, for example, یکی for singular and یکی ها for plural.
John: Let’s hear an example. In English, "Which one do you want?" and in Persian...
Mehrnaz: کدوم یکیو میخوای (کدام یکی را میخواهی)؟
John: We should hear a plural example too.
Mehrnaz: من این شلوارو (شلوار را)‌ دوست دارم ولی مجبورم این یکیو (یکی را) بخرم
John: "I like these pants, but I have to buy these ones."
Mehrnaz: Now, شلوار, which means "pants" is not considered plural in Persian. It’s one item.
John: Things such as glasses and tights are also singular too as there is only one item. But things where there are two distinct items, such as shoes and gloves, are plural.
Mehrnaz: For example, این دستکشا (دستکش ها) از اون (آن) یکیا (یکی ها) گرمترن (گرمترند).
John: "These gloves are warmer than those ones." "Gloves" is plural.
Mehrnaz: There are some more differences with English. For example in the sentence یه (یک) قاشق خواستم ولی نداشتن (نداشتند)...
John: "I asked for a spoon, but they didn’t have one."
Mehrnaz: ...we don’t use "one" like it’s used in English.
John: Let’s hear another similar example.
Mehrnaz: اگر بخوام (بخواهم)‌ ماشین بخرم، یه کوچیکشو (یک کوچکش را)‌ می کیرم.
John: "If I wanted to buy a car, I’d get a small one." We can also use different words when talking about people. If we want to talk about people in general in English, we would use "you." For example, "It isn’t good for you to eat junk food."
Mehrnaz: In Persian, we don’t use "you." Instead, we use either آدم
John: This literally means "man."
Mehrnaz: Or کسی
John: This is "one." Let’s hear a couple of examples.
Mehrnaz: آدم دلش می خواد (می خواهد) با یکی حرف بزنه (بزند).
John: "You feel like talking to someone."
Mehrnaz: کسی که دزدی میکنه (می کند) باید منتظرعواقبش باشه (باشد).
John: "One who steals things must anticipate the consequences."

Outro

John: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Mehrnaz: خداحافظ (khodaahaafez)
