John: Yes, at least the people flying got dinner vouchers. |
Mehrnaz: Flying isn’t as safe and easy in Iran as in some other countries. |
John: Why is that? |
Mehrnaz: Due to economic sanctions on Iran, it’s not always easy to get replacement parts for airplanes. |
John: Are the airplanes usually old and in need of repair? |
Mehrnaz: Yes, most of the planes are old. Domestic flights are often delayed due to repairs. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
John: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is... |
Mehrnaz: تحویل بار |
John: meaning "check-in." |
John: Let’s break down this phrase. |
Mehrnaz: First is تحویل (tahvil), which means "to deliver, to hand over, to hand in." This is followed by بار, baar. |
John: That means "luggage, freight, cargo." |
Mehrnaz: تحویل بار is used commonly by travel agencies and Iranians everywhere. |
John: Is there a more informal version that might be used in airports? |
Mehrnaz: Yes, you’ll hear چک این, “check in.” |
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Mehrnaz: Sure. For example, you can say... بارتو (بارت را) تحویل میدی (میدهی) و کارت پرواز میگیری. |
John: ...which means "You check in and get your boarding pass." |
John: Okay, what's the next word? |
Mehrnaz: هواپیمایی |
John: meaning "airline" |
John: This is a noun. It has a lot of components though, so we’ll break it down. |
Mehrnaz: First is هوا (havaa), meaning "air," and then پیما (peymaa), a noun from the verb پیمودن (peymoodan). |
John: It means "traverse, travel." Last is a suffix. |
Mehrnaz: Yes, یی (yi) |
John: Can you give us an example using this word? |
Mehrnaz: Sure. For example, you can say... من از این هواپیمایی اصلا راضی نیستم. |
John: ... which means "I'm not happy with this airline at all." |
John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
John: In this lesson, you'll learn about expressions useful for understanding delays, suspensions, and cancellations. You’ll probably hear these expressions as part of announcements, like we heard earlier. |
Mehrnaz: These expressions usually start with مسافرین (mosaaferin) |
John: "passengers," |
Mehrnaz: or maybe مسافرین محترم (mosaaferin-e mohtaram-e) |
John: "dear passengers for." This is a very formal phrase as it expresses respect towards the passengers. How are flight numbers expressed? |
Mehrnaz: پرواز (parvaaz) means "flight.” Number is شماره (shomaare-ye). |
John: You might hear that word, "number," said before the actual number, which is read like a three digit number. |
Mehrnaz: For example ۴۲۹ (chaahaar sad-o bist-o noh). |
John: "429." Next would be the destination city. |
Mehrnaz: به مقصد شیراز (beh maghsad-e shiraaz) |
John: This literally means "to destination Shiraz." Now, let’s look at some phrases. |
Mehrnaz: گیت پرواز تغییر کرده است. (geyt-e parvaaz taghir kardeh ast.) |
John: "The departure gate has changed." |
Mehrnaz: زمان پرواز تغییر کرده است. (zamaan-e parvaaz taghir kardeh ast.) |

John: "The departure time will change." |
Mehrnaz: پرواز با تاخیر همراه است. (Geyt-e parvaaz taghir kardeh ast.) |
