INTRODUCTION
There is a wide variety of Iranian dishes, and your job as a visitor is to try as many different foods as possible! However, before you start eating, you have to get to the table! In this lesson, we'll cover getting to the table in a restaurant.
BODY
When entering a restaurant in Iran, you will be greeted with Khosh aamadid, which means “Welcome,”
(slow) Khosh aa – ma - did
Khosh aamadid.
or Befarmaaid, which means “come in please”.
(slow) Be – far - maaid.
Befarmaaid.
When you enter a restaurant, or restooran in Iran, you’ll usually be seated by a waiter or waitress. Often you will be asked the question “How many people in your party?”, so practicing it will come in handy at some point. “How many people are you?” in Persian is
Chand nafar hastid?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) chand na – far has - tid?
Once more:
Chand nafar hastid?
The first word, Chand, which means “How many?”.
(slow) Chand?
chand?
After this comes Nafar, which means “person.”
(slow) Na - far
Nafar
And finally Hastid, which means “are you?”
(slow) Has - tid
Hastid
So literally it is “How many persons are you?”
Chand nafar hastid?
Now let’s go over how to answer.
You might tell the waiter or waitress,
maa se nafar hastim.
which in English means “We are three people.”
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Maa se na – far has - tim.
Once again:
Maa se nafar hastim.
The first word, maa, means “we.”
(slow) maa
maa
And the second word, se, means “three.”
(slow) se
se
After this comes nafar hastim, which is how you say, “persons we are”.
(slow) na – far has - tim
Nafar hastim
Altogether, that’s
Maa se nafar hastim.
Let’s take a look at some of the numbers you might need here, from two to five:
2 do
(slow) do
3 se
(slow) se
4 chahaar
(slow) Chaa - haar
5 panj
(slow) panj
If you are just one person, the proper answer is “I am alone,” which in Persian is
Tanha hastam.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) tan – haa has - tam.
Once more:
Tanhaa hastam.
