Eric: Top 25 Persian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 3: Where do you live? in Persian
In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Persian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ‘Where do you live?’ In Persian this is
Mehrnaz: کجا زندگی می کنین؟
The first word in the question is
Mehrnaz: کجا
Eric: meaning ‘where do’ in English.
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) کجا
Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Mehrnaz: کجا
{Pause}
Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Mehrnaz: زندگی می کنین؟
Eric: meaning ‘you live’.
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) زندگی می کنین؟
Eric: Now repeat.
Mehrnaz: زندگی می کنین؟
{Pause}
Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Mehrnaz: کجا زندگی می کنین؟
{pause}
Eric: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question Where do you live??
Mehrnaz: من تو نیویورک زندگی می کنم.
Eric: "I live in New York.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Mehrnaz: (Slow) من تو نیویورک زندگی می کنم.
{pause}
Eric: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Mehrnaz: من
Eric: means “I”.
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) من
Eric: Now repeat
Mehrnaz: من
{Pause}
Eric: And next
Mehrnaz: تو
Eric: meaning “in”.
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) تو
Eric:Now repeat.
Mehrnaz: تو
{Pause}
Eric: And after that
Mehrnaz: نیویورک
which is New York.
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) نیویورک
Eric:Now repeat.
Mehrnaz: نیویورک
{Pause}
Eric: And after that
Mehrnaz: زندگی می کنم.
meaning ‘live’.
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) زندگی می کنم.
Eric:Now repeat.
Mehrnaz: زندگی می کنم.
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the speaker say, I live in New York, and then repeat.
Mehrnaz: من تو نیویورک زندگی می کنم.
{pause}
Eric: To expand on the pattern, replace New York with Isfahan.
Mehrnaz: اصفهان
Eric: Isfahan
Mehrnaz: (slow) اصفهان (regular) اصفهان
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with Isfahan
Mehrnaz: من تواصفهان زندگی می کنم.
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace New York. Say ‘I live in Isfahan’.
{pause}
Mehrnaz: من تواصفهان زندگی می کنم.
Eric: To make another phrase, replace Isfahan with Mashhad.
Mehrnaz: مشهد
Eric: Mashhad
Mehrnaz: (slow) مشهد (regular) مشهد
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with Mashhad
Mehrnaz: من تومشهد زندگی می کنم.
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace Isfahan. Say ‘I live in Mashhad.’
{pause}
Mehrnaz: من تومشهد زندگی می کنم.
Eric: To expand on the pattern, replace Mashhad with Washington.
Mehrnaz: واشینگتون
Eric: Washington
Mehrnaz: (slow) واشینگتون (regular) واشینگتون
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with Washington
Mehrnaz: من توواشینگتون زندگی می کنم.
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace Mashhad. Say ‘I live in Washington’.
{pause}
Mehrnaz: من توواشینگتون زندگی می کنم.
Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Iran and someone asks where you live. You live in New York. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: کجا زندگی می کنین؟
(five seconds) من تو نیویورک زندگی می کنم.
Eric: Imagine you live in Isfahan. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: کجا زندگی می کنین؟
(five seconds) من تو اصفهان زندگی می کنم.
Eric: Imagine you live in Mashhad. Answer the speaker's question.
Mehrnaz: کجا زندگی می کنین؟
(five seconds) من تو مشهد زندگی می کنم.
Eric: Imagine you live in Washington. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: کجا زندگی می کنین؟
(five seconds) من تو واشینگتون زندگی می کنم.
Eric: Now you want to ask that person where they live. Ask the question
(5 seconds)
Mehrnaz: کجا زندگی می کنین؟
{pause}
Eric: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.
Mehrnaz: کجا زندگی می کنین؟
{pause}
Eric: This is the end of Lesson 3

Hi Robert,

Thank you for your kind feedback!

You can ask you questions in the comment section, and we would be glad to answer. Also, you can upgrade to Premium PLUS Subscription to have 1-on-1 access to a teacher.

You can replace too (تو ) with dar ( دَر ), but it will sound formal.

If you have any question, please let up know.

Best regards,

Ali

Hi, first let me thank you for your course. I've just started but it looks really good. Secondly, I hope it is ok to ask lesson related questions in the comment section. If not, please tell me where I can ask such questions. And here is my question for this lesson ;-). Can I replace "too" with "dar" in the sense of "in" (man dar London zendegi mikonam)? Thanks for your help.
